When most people hear the term “feathers and wedges” they probably don’t think of splitting stone and in most cases the phrase doesn’t make sense at all.
The symbol above Warner Stone is just that, a feather and wedge. Three pieces of iron that are used in a technique that’s been around for hundreds of years to split stone, particularly granite. Many people advised against using the symbol in the logo because of its lack of familiarity but there’s something to be said for a method in the world of stonemasonry that was used back in the 19th century and is still used today.
On a regular basis the kit containing numerous sets of feathers and wedges will be taken out to customize a piece of stone so that it will fit just right. Most of our landscapes are constructed so that they appear as though they belong in the environment in which they were created and that they’ve been there for years. By splitting a stone with the same technique that has been used for over a century there becomes a connection between the past and the present.
Stay tuned to upcoming pictures of the result of this unique process as Warner Stone will be bringing in ornate pieces of granite that will be used in this year’s landscapes.
